It was such a lovely evening. We just sat around eating delicious food and drinking excellent wine and talking to each other. What was it about Greek food that was so special? It was true comfort food, contentment on a plate. The spices, the herbs, the delicious smells of roasting vegetables, all mixing together to make the whole experience unforgettable.

Other customers drifted in and the place gradually filled up, everyone seemed happy and there was laughter in the air. The shopping mall music continued for a while but then the three musicians took a break, voicing their respectful regret but promising they would be back soon. They were rewarded with a polite round of applause.

This was the sort of occasion I had always wanted to be a part of and never had. Peter didn’t much like eating out any more than he had enjoyed spur-of-the-moment holidays and with Lucian there was seldom the opportunity; he was always terrified of being seen by someone who knew Gina. Someone who knew we shouldn’t be together on a wet Thursday evening in Banbury, eating indifferent food in an out-of-the-way pub.

This was how I should be living my life, out in the open, with friends and without constantly worrying about being seen, saying the wrong thing, ordering a main course that would show me to be dull and unsophisticated. I wasn’t going to think like that any more. If I wanted cottage pie at The Ritz, then I would order it.

‘So, the police thing really is over?’ Juliette asked during a pause in the conversation. ‘I mean the whole thing. I won’t get stopped by the police when I get back to Heathrow? I’m not on some blacklist that I don’t know about?’

‘Not at all, it’s quite clear you must have grabbed the wrong bag, you can go back to buying Italian herbs without fear,’ Hera said.

We all laughed and Juliette shook her head. She got up from her seat.

‘I’m off to find the loo. Don’t talk about me while I’m away. Anyway, do I look like a woman who smokes pot, or dried Italian herbs for that matter?’

‘No comment,’ Anita said.

‘Nice!’
